Upskilling Project Affected Personnel
Education
Maamba trust runs the Maamba Private School which offers pre – school, primary and junior secondary education. The school currently employees 30 teachers and has an enrollment of about 800 pupils, of which over 70% are from the local community. The Trust continuously endeavours to uplift learning standards at the school by
- Procuring equipment for Industrial Arts and Home Economics classes
- Setting up a modern well equipped Science Laboratory, computer Laboratory
- Running a well-stocked Library
Vocational Training
In keeping with the vision of helping the community with raising the levels of education, Maamba Development Trust has set up a Vocational Training Centre to help technical skill development for the youth in the region.
The target group is the less privileged youth, who presently are being trained in metal fabrication & welding and to become basic electrical technicians. The training imparted ensures that the candidates have the opportunity to experience the practical skills required and the theoretical basis to understand what they are doing. Plans are afoot for starting a similar course for automotive technicians.
Upskilling Project Affected Personnel
To help the 61 displaced families for building the thermal plant, apart from rehabilitating the families by setting up a PAP village, Maamba Trust built each of the families houses with all modern amenities and established a clinic as well as a community centre.
Maamba Trust is additionally helping them upskill by running tailoring classes for the women and carpentry & joinery classes for the men.
Healthcare
With the aim of helping the local community by creating greater health awareness and improve access to better healthcare for the rural underprivileged, the Maamba Development Trust:
- Partnered with Maamba hospital providing crucial required equipment, apparatus and medicines etc.
- Conducts periodical Medical Outreach Programmes to enable people living in far flung areas including the remotest part of the Sinazongwe district get specialized treatment.
- Collaborated with Operation Eyesight Universal and Ministry of Health to set up a modern eye clinic at Maamba General Hospital to help the people of Sinazongwe district with high prevalence of avoidable blindness on a sustainable basis.
- Donated USD 500,000 to the University Teaching Hospital, Lusaka through its parent Company Nava Bharat Ventures Ltd.
Encouraging Sports
Maamba Trust encourages sports and promotes healthy lifestyle by:
- Runs recreational sporting facilities like Racquet Club with tennis, squash and badminton courts, a golf club with a 9-hole course for use of the community members and employees.
- Sponsors the Maamba Energy Stars Football Club which presently plays in the First Division of Zambia’s football league
- Also supports sports among the youths by sponsoring some major tournaments at school, district and provincial levels, in liaison with the Ministry of Education to ensure government support for the programme.
Environment Protection
Maamba Trust contributes to the sustainability of the environment by:
- Working with the community for township cleanup, on every first Saturday of the month as part of the Government’s ‘Clean Zambia’ initiative.
- Setting up a nursery and running a ‘Green Maamba’ campaign which envisages planting around 50,000 saplings every year.
- Working with a local company, who has been tasked with greening the area around the thermal plant using indigenous trees and plants, and making available treated waste water from the plant thereby conserving on the precious resource.
Infrastructure Development
To anchor CSR initiatives and to leave a legacy for future inhabitants, a key focus area is the development of infrastructure which will serve the community in the years to come. Maamba Trust has been at the forefront of changing the skyline of Maamba by building key infrastructure including:
- Construction of foot bridges for use of community members to cross flooded streams safely and help children reach schools easily
- Upgrading the Maamba Township water treatment plant.
- Building a water pipeline from Lake Kariba to SWASCO for distribution of water to the locals.
- Repairs to township roads costing Kwacha 20 million.
- Upgrading facilities in Maamba Private School.
- Providing assistance during natural calamities
