Of Zambia’s Total Installed Power Capacity in 2023
Mine-mouth power plant at Maamba
Maamba Energy Limited (MEL), a strategic collaboration between Nava Limited and the Government of Zambia, is the country’s largest coal mining concessionaire and operates a state-of-the-art 300 MW mine-mouth coal-fired Thermal Power Plant. A testament to technological innovation, the plant is committed to minimizing its environmental footprint and complies rigorously with global standards set by the World Bank and the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA).
As one of Zambia’s leading Independent Power Producers (IPPs), MEL contributes over 8% of the national installed generation capacity (as of 2023), playing a critical role in meeting the country’s growing energy demand. Its reliable and diversified power supply is instrumental in fortifying energy security and catalyzing Zambia’s economic development.
Building on its strong foundation, MEL is actively pursuing two major strategic initiatives under Nava’s energy division —
MEL has commenced construction of an additional 300 MW capacity, effectively doubling its existing power output. This organic expansion is aimed at addressing Zambia’s rising power requirements. The target commissioning for the new facility is August 2026.
In early 2025, Nava established Maamba Solar Energy Limited (MSEL) as a wholly owned subsidiary of MEL, to explore the feasibility of solar power generation in Zambia. This initiative marks a significant step towards a sustainable and diversified energy portfolio, reinforcing Nava’s commitment to renewable energy and reduced carbon footprint.
Beyond energy generation, MEL continues to champion sustainable community development and social upliftment, aligning with Nava’s core philosophy of inclusive growth. Through investments in infrastructure, health, and education, MEL fosters a holistic approach to Zambia’s socio-economic progress.
